Tips for Subtitling

Subtitling is the process of adding text to any audio-visual media to express the message that is being spoken. Subtitles allow people to read and understand what is being said, and can be added to anything that includes moving pictures.

The translator needs to think creatively to provide a translation that summarizes what is being said, but retaining the core message. Subtitles are typically displayed on 1 or 2 lines of text, in 2-4 second bursts. They are a summarized version of what is being said. Good subtitles should allow the audience to comfortably read and understand them, whilst still being able to consume the visuals.

Below you will find some tips about subtitling:

The text that contains the subtitles must be a natural text, with similar punctuation, spelling rules, and natural language conventions. The language must not become unnatural when trying to adjust the number of characters.

The usual readability and style guidelines apply to subtitles, but sometimes ideas have to be shortened because of characters’ limitations.

Generally, there are two lines as the line division guarantees that the audience will have a greater viewing experience of the video. Each line is limited to 35 characters including symbols and spaces. The maximum number of characters for the two lines of subtitles in a video frame is 70.

Literal translations of plays on words and proverbs are prohibited. These should be translated into equivalent phrases to the target culture.

Never split the article and the noun, do not leave a preposition at the end of the line with the object in the line below.

It is not recommended to end your subtitle with a comma, colon, or semi-colon.
